Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Cassie's first impressions

Cassie walking the coast of Robben Island
When I first landed in Cape Town I was mainly excited about leaving an entire day of traveling behind me. As we loaded the bus to go to the house it was slowly becoming real. We were finally here in Cape Town.   We passed by Eros School for Cerebral Palsy where I will be interning so I was really excited to see where I will be for the next three months. Once we were all settled in our adventures began. We learned the area we would be living in for the next several months and had several safety briefings to assure our safety during out stay here in Cape Town. We ate at many magnificent restaurants experiencing the different cuisines.  My favorite day thus far was the trip around the peninsula. I had been told more than once Cape Town is the most beautiful place in the world and that day proved them right. I was in awe the entire day over the view of the white sand covering the beaches and mountains right behind them.  I’m still questioning whether I was dreaming or not. And I can’t forget, I fed a seal by hand at Hout Bay.  The next day we were invited to attend Sivuyile Baptist Church which turned out to be incredible. The dancing and singing and the community involvement going on was energizing and a lot of fun.  We have now been here for about one week and have already had the pleasure of experiencing so much.  I cannot wait to see what the rest of the semester is going to bring.
