Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Johnny's appreciating this opportunity

After being here for about 3 weeks now, Cape Town is becoming the norm in my life. This is something that kind of scares me. I walk out of the house in the morning to be greeted by a majestic mountain, bathed by sunlight, where clouds sometimes strike the mountain side in a way that appears as a waterfall. Describing that scene makes me think of this place as one of the most beautiful places to live in the world. The people here are unparalleled in terms of friendliness, compassion, and an overall attitude towards life. These amazing qualities of life are also met by a constant struggle for some people that live here. These aspects of life are something that I have never seen or experienced before. The last thing that I want to happen is to become desensitized by both the beauty and struggle of this city. For now, I still wake up with a smile on my face ready to embrace the new day and I want to use every ability that I have been given to continue to appreciate this opportunity.
