Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Morgan LOVES her internship

I love my internship. Getting up in the morning is easy; I never once have had to drag myself out of bed. I wake up ready to take on the day. I think this shows that when you are doing something you enjoy, it doesn't feel like work.
Allie, Jenna, Morgan, Katrina, & Emily W with Sister Castle at Tafelsig Clinic.
This past week at Tafelsig Clinic was especially exciting. One of the sisters, (nurses are called sisters in South Africa) Portia, taught me how to draw blood. Growing up, I was always a little squeamish and scared of blood, but I’ve gotten so desensitized to it to at the clinic. I see all sorts of wounds come in every day, and I'm getting used to it. Stitches no longer freak me out, but fascinate me! IV's are no longer scary, jabbing, needles, rather a tool to help patients get better. Working at the clinic has really made me feel more confident in myself and my abilities. Now I am so sure that I want to go in to medicine.

All of the sisters and doctors at the clinic are amazing. They really have taken all 5 of us interns under their wing, and treat us like their own children. It was Jenna’s birthday last week, and one of the nurses Sister Castle planned out a huge birthday surprise for her during our tea break. She snuck out with me, Emily, and Katrina during our lunch break the day before to go to a party store to get an edible picture cake with Jenna’s face on it. It was so cute! Sister Castle was so excited to plan it all and made us promise we wouldn’t ruin the surprise. Surprise. On the day of the party, other nurses in the clinic also chipped in and brought muffins and all sorts of baked goods. Jenna was SO surprised and it was such a fun day. We are starting to become a very tight knit family at the clinic. I can’t imagine working anywhere else.
