Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Courtney's busy weekend

This past weekend we stayed with families in Oceanview, a township located close to Cape Point along the Cape Peninsula. Our entire class was divided into pairs of two and we were all assigned to stay with various families. I had a wonderful time staying with the Daniels family, and my housemate, Drew.

We left the University of Cape Town on Thursday immediately following class, and arrived in Oceanview around 3:30 p.m. We had a welcome orientation at a crèche (South African term for Kindergarten), and then a welcome dinner of traditional South African food. Following this, we all split up to our various families throughout the community for the night.

On Friday, we woke up bright and early to volunteer at the crèche. We were all assigned a one or two children for the day. I had the one kid in the class who didn’t speak English, Tinashe, but I absolutely loved him. In the beginning of the day, he was very shy and quiet, but he warmed up very quickly. With the children, we played different games, did face painting and went to visit a petting zoo across from Oceanview. Volunteering at the crèche was definitely one of my favorite experiences here.

On Friday, my host family, as well as a few other girls, went to a Valentine’s Day ballroom dancing lesson at the community center, which was quite the workout. We learned the waltz, jive and cha cha. Hopefully I’ll be able to remember all the dances.

Saturday was a more relaxing day where we went to the beach, and took a drive around the peninsula which was absolutely beautiful. We kept our eye out for baboons, but unfortunately did not see any. Sunday was spent at church in the morning, which was sort of like a Christian rock church, and then we departed Sunday afternoon after a delicious lunch of every kind of roasted vegetable. When we returned to Mowbray Sunday afternoon, we had a quick turnaround (after finding out we don’t have wi fi AGAIN), and then headed back to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens for a Freshlyground concert (one of the most popular South African bands).
