Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Savannah's loving her internship

Life after orientation has been great. Not a day has gone by that I haven't been doing something fun and exciting.

So far, I've only been at my internship for 4 days but I'm already loving it. I haven't heard great things about my internship from past students, so I was a little nervous at first. The first day I got there, I was unexpectedly taken to the OR for surgeries for the day. I haven't had any clinical experience yet, so I guess this was the best way to learn. I was all scrubbed up and ready to watch the surgery when all of a sudden I felt light headed and could feel my breakfast coming up. I finally got over the fact that I was seeing someone else's blood and bones and started to enjoy my morning there. That day, I was in the OR helping the nurses with 4 intensive surgeries, one being an amputation of a 2 year olds foot.

Yesterday they were short on people in the OR so I was the radiographer for one of the knee surgeries. I found out that am going to be in surgery two days a week and then with the patients once a week. Being with the patients is one of my favorite parts of being at Maitland Cottage. On Tuesday, we get to make rounds with the doctors in the mornings. In the afternoon, we get to be with the kids and play with them. Despite being ill, the kids were so happy and full of laughter. They call me "Auntie" and all scream my name at the same time. I haven't smiled that big in so long.

Other than internships, I plan on doing some hiking and going to Old Biscuit Mill this weekend. Last weekend, a handful of us went to Camps Bay and enjoyed the sunset. We were out all day. I want to take advantage of all the free time I have when I'm here!
