Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Courtney's craziest adventure . . .so far

What’s the Craziest Thing I’ve Done in Cape Town

While some may be able to respond to that title with some type of alcohol fueled story on Long Street, the craziest thing I’ve done in Cape Town so far is pretty much crawl down a mountain in the pitch dark.

Tonight, Jessica, Val, David, Johnny, Tina, and Emily hiked Lion’s Head at dusk. Lion’s Head is one of the mountains overlooking the city of Cape Town and Robbin Island on one side and Camps Bay on the other side. At 2195 feet, it’s not quite as large as Table Mountain/Devil’s Peak, but it’s definitely up there.

We went up at dusk with the goal of watching the sunset. We almost made it to the summit for sunset, but still saw it as we were hiking around it. Once finally making it to the summit after using stables, ladders and chains to get to the top at some point, we obviously had to enjoy the incredible view of the city of lights at night. While relaxing on top of a mountain is obviously enjoyable, the thought of coming back down was always at the back of my mind.

I hiked down the mountain (or rather more accurately, crawled) by bouncing off rocks similar to the way a young child would bounce down the stairs. I had my phone in between my teeth to use as a flashlight while still being able to use both hands to get through the rocks. My legs were pretty shaky toward the end, because I’m definitely not as in shape as I used to be. My only complaint was we didn’t see any of the scorpions we were promised to see.

It was an incredible experience, and I’m glad I finally have an answer for the “what’s the craziest thing you’ve done while abroad” question.
