Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Courtney's first impressions

Courtney riding the bus
I have no idea what I expected when I landed in Cape Town a little over a week ago, but what I have experienced so far was definitely not it. Cape Town is far more beautiful than anything I could ever have imaged. Obviously the scenery is incredible, but the people I have met so far have exceeded any preconceived notion I may have had.

Today we participated in the notorious transportation exercise. Our class was divided into groups to test out mass transit methods like the minibus, the train, taxis, and the Jammie, UTC’s shuttle. My group was waiting at the Jammie stop for a little over an hour for the second shuttle into the city. While there we chatted with another student who was telling us the ropes of Cape Town and in the meantime, let two of her shuttles pass just so she could spend more time talking to us.

Yesterday we participate into a community tour and everyone was so happy to see us. They were all so welcoming and friendly. Visiting the secondary school, is the happiest anyone has ever been to see us.

Grade 12 learners at Sithembele Matiso High School warmly welcome the
entire UConn group and are eager to have their picture taken with us.
These instances are what have made Cape Town great so far, and I can’t wait to continue to meet the great people here in Cape Town.
