Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Jessica's first impressions

Jessica
I had no expectations for my study abroad experience. At least that’s what I came here telling myself. I lied not only to myself but also to everyone who asked me, “what do you expect from Cape Town, South Africa?”

I, in fact, had many expectations and many preconceived notions, all gathered from various sources and all, for the most part shattered when I arrived.

I told everyone that I chose South Africa because I wanted to go somewhere as different as possible from anywhere I had been before. What shocked me the most was the degree of normalcy that this place gives off. I am not living in a tribal village with a dirt flood. There are no lions roaming the streets. And to my disappointment everyone does not walk around in traditional tribal garb on a day-to-day basis.

Don’t get me wrong, there is plenty of “different” to experience. As I write this I am staring at a mountain from my front yard and listening to the blasting of a mix of drumming and techno music coming from my neighbors’ house.

“What is your first impression of Cape Town?” that was the question that was posed to me and the 25 fellow UConn students who are also studying abroad. First Impression: (same as most people you talk to) Cape Town is beautiful. It is city nestled in a mountain range and outlined by beaches, how could it not be beautiful? And you know what? That is what I was expecting. I was expecting beauty like I had never seen before. That sounds really corny but its true and words cannot really explain it.  Here is a picture, in attempt to portray how incredible it is here, but the only way to really understand is to come visit me! I am here until the end of April!

Is that even real?! Yes. Folks. It is! And it is not from google,
that was taken by me and my slowly improving photography skills.
