Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Allie has never been so excited

Hi everyone! My name is Alexandra Leveillee but I always go by Allie or Al. At UConn I am studying Physiology and Neurobiology, following a pre-med track and am in my sophomore year. I am from out of state and live in East Greenwich, Rhode Island so I am not traveling too far from home coming to Connecticut. I chose to apply to the study abroad in Cape Town program because I have never experienced other cultures, nor have I ever spent a significant amount of time far away from home. The cultural diversity and sheer beauty of South Africa is what originally drew my attention to the program, and after researching the internship opportunity, I was determined to go. Being a science major, I am so excited to have clinical experience in a foreign country and to meet new people and have hands on experience.

Reading the email and learning that I would be spending three and a half months in Cape Town was one of the most exciting moments of my life. It was literally the only time I have experienced crying out of pure joy! I was sitting with my best friend and immediately grabbed her hand and couldn’t stop saying, “oh my god I’m going, I’m going!” I called my entire family just a moment later and still cannot stop telling everyone and anyone that I get to have this opportunity! The list of experiences and activities that will be available to us is daunting and overwhelming and I can’t wait to start tackling all of it! I’m not sure the reality has set in yet, and I don’t think it will until we’re there! Or maybe I’ll just be convinced I’m dreaming, but either way I’m hoping these next three months fly by because I have never been so excited for something in my entire life!
