Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Sarah faced no indecison choosing Cape Town Study Abroad

Hi everyone! My name is Sarah Luft and I'm a sophomore here at UConn. I'm currently working on creating an individualized major that pulls from the disciplines of English, HDFS, and Anthropology. I'm also hoping to graduate with a double major in economics and a minor in human rights.

An ACES major candidate my freshman year, I had a hard time choosing a field of study. Those who know me well would tell you that I'm often indecisive. Choosing Cape Town, however, was different. I'd always wanted to travel across the world, and specifically venture to Africa. When I stumbled upon the UConn in Cape Town, South Africa symposium last fall, I was so impressed, so intrigued by the stories of the returning co-educators. Watching their faces light up with excitement, learning about the opportunity to intern, and hearing about the family they became, I actually decided right then and there–I would apply to study abroad in Cape Town my sophomore year. And now, I can still barely believe I'm going! Each time I remember I find myself lost in daydreams, accompanied by growing joy and curiosity.

The twelve months between my decision to apply and my acceptance into this program have flown by. And now we are less than three months away from departure . . . January 13th–yes, of course I've memorized it! What perhaps drew me most to the program was its focus on understanding rather than simply traveling, on really and truly delving into South Africa's history, and on connecting with the people there. I hope to reach out and help others, come to know my peers, and to grow in return. I can't possibly put all of my excitement into words about this trip. But I will say that choosing to apply to study abroad in Cape Town remains the surest decision I’ve made yet throughout my college career.  Since reading those official words of acceptance, I couldn’t be more elated! I hope to make the very most of our journey in Cape Town.
