Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

For Ava January can't come soon enough

Hi everyone! My name is Ava Iannitti and I’m a sophomore at UConn’s Stamford campus. My major at the moment is Psychology, but it may change to pre-law. Either way, I plan to further my education even more by going to graduate school or law school.

I grew up in the Bronx, NY and moved to Greenwich, CT when I was sophomore in high school. In this area, I have seen extreme wealth with very kind and humble people, but also with people who are flashy and unwilling to share. Coming from a life surrounded by poverty, seeing people who have so much extravagance seems very strange to me. From my experience with moving, I firmly believe that life’s work should revolve around giving back tenfold. If you are able, your life should be committed to seeking intrinsic goods for yourself and others. I am not truly happy unless I am part of something that aids others directly. This is why I wanted to go Cape Town with UConn. The focus of the internship and how hands-on it is will truly bring me to a state of inner peace and happiness. And hey- the absolutely breathtaking views of Cape Town aren’t so bad either. The pictures of the UCT campus and views from Table Mountain only added to my excitement in applying!

I was absolutely thrilled when I received my acceptance that I cried! Being a part of something so beautiful-there’s no greater feeling. January cannot come soon enough. I am more than ready to start this incredible journey and to build a relationship with all of you. Congrats to everyone for getting in!
