Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Tina's ready for a new chapter in her life

Hi y’all! My name is Christina (Tina) Andrzejewski and I am a junior majoring in Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies.  When I first arrived to UConn, I had heard of the Cape Town Study Aboard program and instantly knew that it would be a trip that I would have to look into. With only having three more semesters left until I graduate, I thought that the timing for the program could not be better and that it was too perfectly suited towards my interests for me to pass up. Having also heard stories from my father about his time growing up as a child in Uganda also made Cape Town, and Africa in general, sound like such a rewarding and unconventional location to spend four months abroad exploring. My main priority when looking into different programs was to pick a location I may not have the opportunity to go to as readily as others, so Cape Town won my heart.

I still cannot fully wrap my mind around the magnitude of what exactly I am going to experience in Cape Town, but am beyond thrilled to find out! Although I am a bit hesitant about being so far from home, I know that once I am immersed in the culture of Cape Town that I will soon become happily distracted. As soon as the clock stuck midnight on Thursday, I impulsively refreshed my email waiting for a response. When I saw that I got in, I initially did not believe it, for I had overthought the entire application and interview process and prepared myself bad news. To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement; I could not fathom how much this trip would alter my life and impact my mindset.

I am so fortunate to be surrounded by such supportive family and friends who have only been encouraging by reminding me that everything happens for a reason. Even though being away from my family and friends will be difficult, I know that this experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity that is too good to pass up. I’m excited to get such a different taste of life and culture, and cannot wait to open this new chapter in my life.
