Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Courtney's hoping the next 3 months fly by

Hi Everyone!

My name is Courtney and I’m a senior here at UConn majoring in journalism and political science, and minoring in economics and environmental policy (I had a hard time deciding on a major, so that’s what I ended up with). With that being said, I didn’t think I was going to be able to fit in a semester abroad, but am very excited to be going to South Africa for my last semester as an undergraduate! In the future, I hope to work in some type of environmental conservation or advocacy.

I decided on South Africa, because I only need one more class after this semester, so I didn’t want to go somewhere and take five classes. The internship component of this program definitely appealed the most to me. Not only are the internships “cool” (I believe that’s the best word I could come up with during my interview due to nervousness), but past students, and us too, will actually be doing things that have an impact. Of course the beautiful weather and the high praise from past students didn't make this a very hard decision either.

I have been talking and thinking about this program since last April, so finally being able to hear I was accepted was an incredible feeling. Of course I had to call both my mom and sister at 12:30 a.m. to share the good news with them!

Words cannot describe how excited I am to leave for Cape Town (although I swore I would not be taking any more extremely long flights for a while after my direct flight home from Tokyo this past summer). Here’s to hoping the next three months and the 14+ hour flight fly by!
