Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,
Marita McComiskey, PhD

Kiya happier than she could have imagined

Hello. My name is Prekiya (Kiya) Kennebrew and I am a junior at UCONN. I am a psychology major with a concentration in Industrial and Organization (I/O) Psychology. My research interest include gender studies in the workplace and judgment and decision-making. After UCONN, I want to go to graduate school in hopes of obtaining my PhD in I/O Psychology and one day become a Personnel Consultant.

Unlike some, I initially did not have studying abroad in my plans until two weeks before the application deadline. I had previously played with the idea but never actually considered going abroad for a semester. What this experience was actually going to mean for me did not hit me until I had the interview prior to being accepted. I have a lot of commitments here at UCONN and feared change up until that point in time. When asked why I wanted to go to South Africa I wholeheartedly meant everything I said. I want to make a difference. I want to learn, grow, and experience the unknown.

I am happier than I could have ever imagined. I am so grateful for this opportunity and cannot wait until January 13, 2014. I am excited for the many relationships I will build with the fellow UCONN students who will be joining me on this life changing experience and the many new people I will meet while in Cape Town, South Africa.
