Welcome to our blog

WELCOME TO OUR BLOG

As anyone who has participated in UConn's Study Abroad in Cape Town Program can attest, there are no words to adequately explain the depth of the experiences, no illustrations to sufficiently describe the hospitality of the people, and no pictures to begin to capture the exquisiteness of the scenery. Therefore this blog is merely intended to provide an unfolding story of the twenty-six 2014 co-educators who are traveling together as companions on this amazing journey.

As Resident Director and Faculty Advisor of this program since 2008 it is once again my privilege and honor to accompany yet another group of exceptional students to this place I have come to know and love.

In peace, with hope,

Jenna can't contain her excitement

I’m not quite sure where to begin.  My name is Jennifer (Jenna) Kline, I’m a sophomore at the University of Connecticut, and I hope to soon major in Nursing.

I decided to study abroad in Cape Town because I don’t want the ‘traditional’ study abroad experience.  If I studied abroad elsewhere I would imagine my journey would consist primarily of classes and traveling around to see the major landmarks/attractions of the particular country. While I wish to travel and do just that throughout the world someday when I’m older, I want something more out of my study abroad experience now. All my life, I’ve found the most joy in helping others.  In Cape Town I can do just that.  I will be given the opportunity to intern at a medical facility where I can already foresee myself being most happy while there and for it to be incredibly life changing.

It’s so difficult for me to put into words how I felt when I found out I was selected to participate in the program. I hadn’t told anyone I was even applying to go abroad except my parents because I was so nervous about not getting in, so as soon as I got the acceptance email I ran to tell everyone I possibly could.  I could not stop smiling the entire next day, and even now thinking about how we’re leaving in exactly THREE MONTHS (!!!) I can’t contain my excitement. While I’m nervous and anxious too, I don't think I’ve ever looked forward to something as much as I’m looking forward to this experience. I cannot wait to learn more about South Africa, to learn more about the others participating in this program, and to learn more about myself over the four months while abroad. I have heard many stories from past participants (thank you to Patrick) about how amazing Cape Town is and I can’t wait to experience it all for myself. Let the countdown begin!
